USAFE Airmen begin training with Bulgarian counterparts

More than 180 Airmen from Royal Air Force Lakenheath, England, and 12 F-15C Eagles flew to Graf Ignatievo Air Base, near Plovdiv, Bulgaria, to participate in a bilateral training event, Thracian Eagle 2014, Aug. 18-Sep. 1.

Pilots from the 493rd Fighter Squadron, maintainers and a mixture of other professions, including Airmen from Ramstein Air Base, Germany, are in Bulgaria to improve joint readiness and reassure regional allies and partners.

"We are here to demonstrate our commitment and resolve to our NATO partners," said Lt. Col. John Stratton, 493rd FS commander. "Conducting these bilateral training events helps us strengthen our relationships and improve capabilities."

Service members receive RAND military workplace survey

About 580,000 service members have begun receiving emails or letters inviting them to participate in the first RAND Military Workplace Study, Defense Department officials said.

Active and reserve component members in all military branches and the Coast Guard are being invited to participate.

"The survey is unprecedented in its scale and will influence policies that affect everyone in the services," defense officials said.

The survey is voluntary and confidential. No one at DOD will ever see how an individual service member responds, officials stressed.

USAFE Airmen continue training with Greeks

The bilateral training between the Greek and U.S. air forces continues this week with more large-force employments.

Fighter pilots normally fly together in what is called a four-ship formation -- four pilots with assigned roles and duties who protect each other. During this week's LFE, multiple groups of four-ships, both Greek and US, must partner to execute a mission or overcome a simulated threat.

The significance of such training has been stressed by the senior leadership of both countries' participating Airmen.

US, Poland train for humanitarian missions to Iraq

Partnering with U.S. Air Force Airmen deployed to Powidz Air Base, Poland, loadmasters from both nations began training together, Aug. 11, to sharpen the skills necessary for Polish airmen to conduct humanitarian missions to Iraq.

"We want to be on the same page," said Polish Sierz (Sgt.) Hieronim Chabras, 33rd Transportation Air Base C-130E loadmaster. "It is good to go over this training together before a mission like this."

The joint training was especially beneficial to the Airmen deployed from Ramstein Air Base, Germany. To date, U.S. military aircraft have delivered more than 27,000 gallons of fresh drinking water and nearly 100,000 meals to the displaced and endangered Iraqi people. The C-130's, flown by both Polish and American forces, are uniquely suited to handle the mass container delivery airdrops meant to alleviate the suffering in Iraq.
