New 3rd Air Force commander talks priorities, shares experiences

Lt. Gen. Darryl L. Roberson, 3rd Air Force and 17th Expeditionary Air Force commander, outlined his priorities, challenges, leadership philosophy and personal experiences during an interview here Sept. 2.

Roberson indicated that he has three top priorities: motivational mission accomplishment, compassionate care of our Airmen and families, and the constant drive to improve and innovate.

"I use 'motivational and compassionate' because it's more than just mission accomplishment and it's more than just taking care of our Airmen," Roberson said. "I'm a believer that if you take care of the Airmen and the families, they will willingly take care of the mission. In regards to 'improve and innovate,' it's our Airmen out there who are figuring out better ways to do things on a day-to-day basis. That's so critical with the challenges we face today including sequestration, reduced funding and reduced manpower; our mission remains and we can't accomplish our mission w

The duo was the only two Air Force members working alongside a small Army unit around the time of August 2012, when Travers was tasked with what he calls 'one of the most difficult missions.'

Spangdahlem remembers 9/11

More than 200 Airmen and German civilians gathered together for a 9/11 memorial ceremony Sept. 11, 2014 at the Spangdahlem Air Park Memorial.

This was the 13th anniversary of the attack and the ceremony consisted of personal speeches and a wreath laying.

Proceedings started at exactly 2:46 p.m., or 8:46 a.m. EST, the time when the first plane struck the North Tower in New York City.

"Everyone has their story of where they were when 9/11 occurred," said U.S. Air Force Col. Pete Bilodeau, 52nd Fighter Wing commander, during his opening remarks at the ceremony. "It's a day we will always remember. The terrorists' intent was to greatly injure us and undermine everything that we stand for. However, this act of terror inadvertently strengthened and unified us."
