Nearly 200 Luxembourgers and Americans observed the 70th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during a commemorative ceremony at Luxembourg American Cemetery and Memorial in Luxembourg, Dec. 16, 2014.

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg; Xavier Bettel, prime minister of Luxembourg; Robert Mandell, U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg; U.S. Air Force Gen. General promotes 4 Airmen on the spot

Gen. Frank Gorenc, U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa commander, rewarded four Airmen with on-the-spot promotions to the rank of technical sergeant, effective Dec. 17, through the Stripes for Exceptional Performers program.

Tech. Sgt. Adam Culver, Tech. Sgt. Mauhamed Gadiaga, Tech. Sgt. Jessica Johnson and Tech. Sgt. Eric Sonnenberg were recognized as outstanding performers among their peers and meeting all eligibility criteria for the program.

Culver, a 65th Civil Engineer Squadron heating and ventilation technician, filled a critical master sergeant billet in his unit; managed a $2.2 million budget for the operations flight; and led the air conditioning upgrade for an F-15 flight simulator, cooling $4 million of command and control assets.  He was also a key player in earning the Chief of Staff team Excellence Award in 2011 and was a distinguished graduate in several professional military education courses.

RUfit? Team sports maintain social fitness

U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa began a new campaign called "RUfit?" Oct.1, which focuses on the four pillars of fitness: social, mental, physical and spiritual. 

Some Ramstein High School students highlighted the importance of team sports to maintaining social fitness.

"Being part of a team provides you with better skills in life--you learn teamwork," said Madison Spohr, a senior athlete at Ramstein High School. "You also learn how to communicate better with different types of people and different types of situations."

Firefighters host course with Lithuanians

Firefighters from the 435th Air Ground Operations Wing's Contingency Response Group provided a familiarization course to 12 Lithuanian Airmen Dec. 4, 2014, at Ramstein Air Base, Germany.

The course started off with a class room discussion on U.S. search and rescue procedures and techniques and ended with a demonstration from the Lithuanian firefighters, showcasing what they had learned.

"Attending these courses is great because it provides us an opportunity to improve on our own techniques," said Capt. Mykolas Liugas, Lithuanian air force pilot. "After learning what we can here, we will take that knowledge back to our country and compare it to what we do so we can increase our response capabilities."

PJ’s extraordinary heroism earns Air Force Cross

Recognizing extraordinary heroism shown in combat, Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James presented the Air Force Cross to an Air Commando during a ceremony here, Dec. 17.

Master Sgt. Ivan Ruiz, a pararescueman deployed with the 22nd Expeditionary Special Tactics Squadron, was awarded the U.S. military's second highest decoration, only to the Medal of Honor, for an Airman. He earned the medal for protecting and saving the lives of two wounded teammates while under heavy enemy fire at close range during combat operations in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan, Dec. 10, 2013.

Thousands honor returning WWII veterans at Bastogne

More than 40,000 American and European citizens honored the service and legacy of more than 40 surviving World War II veterans as part of a 70th anniversary celebration of the Battle of the Bulge at Bastogne, Belgium, Dec. 13, 2014.

The veterans, who served in the six-week long and costliest campaign in U.S. Army history, received special recognition from Belgian and American distinguished visitors including King Philippe and Queen Mathilde of Belgium; Charles Michel, Belgian prime minister; U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove, Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe commander; and Thomas Nides, former U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources and head of the U.S. presidential delegation.

Kidnapping victim shares story during Storytellers

An Italian priest who was kidnapped on a mission trip to the Philippines shared his story of adversity and resilience with Team Aviano members during the 3rd annual Storytellers event, Dec. 12, here.

The event that gives individuals a chance to share life-changing events they've been through, allowed Father Giuseppe Pierantoni to speak about an unforgettable experience.

Pierantoni had a dream for his life that may sound unusual - he wanted to live with the poor and live how they live. In 1991, his church granted his wish and sent him to the Philippines, to take part in outreach programs where he spent his next ten years caring for the less fortunate.
