3rd AF commander visits RAF Mildenhall

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Darryl Roberson, 3rd Air Force commander, along with Chief Master Sgt. Mark Marson, 3rd Air Force command chief, visited RAF Mildenhall July 21 and 22, 2014, to meet with Team Mildenhall Airmen.

The general toured a variety of units, including the 100th Security Forces Squadron, 100th Maintenance Group and 351st Air Refueling Squadron.

Roberson's visit also included piloting a KC-135 Stratotanker during a refueling mission with F-15C Eagles and F-15E Strike Eagles from the 48th Fighter Wing, out of RAF Lakenheath, England. The 351st ARS showed him how they enable the global reach capabilities of the Air Force.

SECAF discusses current, future challenges with 501st CSW

Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James visited RAF Alconbury and RAF Molesworth, United Kingdom, to learn more about the mission of the 501st Combat Support Wing and to discuss with Airmen the current state of the Air Force.

During her visit, James was able to meet with 501st CSW Airmen and see firsthand how their innovation and dedication powers the nation's only combat support wing.

"I have full confidence that the Airmen of U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa are well positioned to be forward, ready, now," James said.

A thin sliver of light shone through the break between two heavy, dark curtains. No one saw, no one noticed the slight, almost imperceptible, movement of fabric.

Everyone's attention was focused at the base of the stage where Col. Douglas Mellars, 422nd Air Base Group commander, was briefing Airmen on changing the leadership culture on RAF Croughton, United Kingdom.

U.S. Forces display military might at Farnborough

Organizations, businesses and military forces from across the globe gathered in Farnborough, England, to celebrate 100 years of aviation at the Farnborough International Air Show July 14 -20, 2014. FIA is a biennial international trade show for the aerospace industry to demonstrate the latest in both civilian and military aircraft capabilities.

"Farnborough gives us the opportunity to showcase our military personnel, aircraft, and technology with our allies," said U.S. Air Force Col. Todd Pavich, U.S. Air Forces in Europe, FIA air boss. "The aircraft we have on display demonstrate our capability to accomplish the missions we may be called upon to execute."

Col. Robert Novotny takes command of Liberty Wing

Nearly 1,000 Airmen, dignitaries and distinguished visitors from the local area watched as Col. Robert Novotny took command of the 48th Fighter Wing from Col. Kyle Robinson July 21, 2014.

Before taking command of the Liberty Wing, Novotny served as the Chief of Staff for the 9th Air and Space Expeditionary Task Force and the International Security Assistance Force Joint Command, Deputy Commander for Air, in Kabul, Afghanistan.

During the ceremony in Hangar 7, Novotny said he was looking forward to working with 48th FW Airmen. About two years ago, when asked if he could choose anywhere to serve as a wing commander, his response - without hesitation - was Lakenheath.

Lajes Field supports B-2 refueling mission

A U.S. Air Force KC-135R Stratotanker departed from here, June 11, 2014. The Stratotanker refueled a pair of B-2 Spirits over the North Atlantic Ocean. The B-2's conducted training flights and regional familiarization in the U.S. European Command area of operations. The B-2 is a multi-role bomber capable of delivering both conventional and nuclear munitions.

494th FS supports Farnborough International Airshow

Celebrating 100 years of aviation history, U.S. military personnel from bases around Europe are participating in this year's biennial 2014 Farnborough International Airshow, which runs here, July 14-20.

Farnborough International Airshow is host to a trade exhibition for aviation and defense industries, as well as public airshow activities for general attendance, showcasing the latest military and civilian aviation capabilities.

U.S. participation in the show highlights the strong alliance with the U.K., while also supporting and protecting national security interests. One unit supporting this key mission is the 494th Fighter Squadron, assigned two hours away at Royal Air Force Lakenheath. The 494th FS' F-15E Strike Eagle, flown by Capt. Tom Meyers, pilot, and Maj. Claire Lundberg, weapons systems officer, travelled to FIA to make an appearance as a static display.
