Air National Guard soars skies over Poland

Airmen from the U.S. and Polish Air Forces started training together at the 33rd Air Base at Powidz Air Base, Poland, Oct. 15, 2014, for the start of Aviation Detachment rotation 15-1.

Roughly 50 Airmen and three C-130 Hercules aircraft from the 182nd Airlift Wing, Illinois Air National Guard, Peoria, Illinois, will participate in the training hosted by Detachment 1, 52nd Operations Group, in Lask Air Base, Poland.

"Our mission here is to support the Aviation Detachment rotation and build upon the interoperability between our two forces," said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Douglas Applegren, chief of tactics for rotation 15-1. "We have been looking forward to this rotation ever since we found out about it, and our Airmen are excited to work and train together with the Polish air force."

Ramstein teams with German partners during exercise

Ramstein Airmen in concert with German disaster response authorities participated in a combined major accident response exercise, or MARE, here Oct. 18.

The exercise tested German and U.S. first responders' ability to react to a massive on-base accident, from initial notification to the recovery phase.  The MARE was an opportunity to train and rehearse roles and responsibilities in a crisis between Ramstein Airmen and German partners.

"Our German counterparts from the Kaiserslautern area brought a wealth of knowledge and experience to the scenario," said Col. Lee Smith, 86th Airlift Wing vice commander. "Together, we used our skills to test our interoperability and coordination during a crisis and I am very pleased with the results."

Black Eye Campaign: Did you notice?

Imitation bruises, black eyes and scratches painted the faces of more than 15 male and female volunteers to educate individuals for Domestic Violence Awareness Month, during the second annual Black Eye Campaign here, Oct. 3.

Airmen, civilian employees and spouses roamed the base to see if bystanders would step up and ask them if they were okay.

"This is a one-day social experiment that brings awareness about domestic violence and shows how seldom people are willing to step out or offer assistance," said Keith Baronsky, 31st Medical Operations Squadron Family Advocacy Program outreach manager.

Airman takes second chance

"Hey babe, I've got some really hard news you need to hear," she said, choking back tears on the phone. "Remember the cops on Spring Street last night? It was Henry. He's gone. I'm so sorry."

Even four years later, my ex-girlfriend's words still echo throughout my head relentlessly and it brings me back to that night.

Henry Dang was my best friend throughout my tenure at Windsor Locks High School.  We met during my awkward transition into a new school and a new place at the end of my sophomore year.

Spangdahlem Air Base honors the "Big Man"

For some, it's a great honor to have a building, street or room named after you. For one Airman, known by as "big man" in the local German community and the base, this honor has become a reality.

The gymnasium inside the Eifel Power Haus was named after George Price, 52nd Force Support Squadron special events coordinator, Oct. 16, 2014.

"If I had to sum George Price up in one word it would be 'icon'," said Jude Sorg, 52nd FSS deputy commander. "I think that there is not a better honor that his community and this base could give to George other than to memorialize this particular gymnasium that will last forever in George's name. There is nobody that has given more time, energy, volunteerism and actually more work to fitness and sports in the Spangdahlem area."
