UNC celebrates the 69th anniversary of the United Nations in Japan

Army Gen. Curtis M. Scaparrotti, commander of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command, and U.S. Forces Korea traveled to Tokyo as the host and guest speaker at a reception honoring the 69th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations held Tuesday evening at the New Sanno Hotel in Tokyo.

The reception was attended by Japanese and international dignitaries who gathered to honor the founding of the UN, recognizing what UNC and United Nations Command-Rear contributed and accomplished in the region for the over 60 years.

SECAF visits Andersen during PACAF engagement

Secretary of the Air Force Deborah Lee James visited here Nov. 19-20, to meet with Airmen and gain a better understanding of the central role Andersen plays within Pacific Command as part of engagements at Pacific Air Force bases.

During her visit, members of Team Andersen briefed James on some of the unique missions found at Andersen, including the continuous bomber presence and theater security package programs, the U.S. Army's terminal high altitude area defense battery site, and the Pacific Regional Training Center.

Kunsan hosts Exercise Max Thunder 14-2

U.S. Air Force, Army, Marine Corps and Navy personnel and aircraft are training with Republic of Korea air force units in the semi-annual, bilateral training exercise, Max Thunder 14-2, at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, Nov. 14 through 22.

Exercise Max Thunder 14-2 consists of more than 1,300 Airmen, Soldiers, Sailors and Marines working alongside elements of the ROKAF to conduct exercise scenarios simulating combined flying operations against hostile forces.

U.S. forces are jointly coordinating with ROK air forces personnel on all aspects of training, including planning, large force employment tactics and debriefing for the largest flying exercise held on the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. Air Force, JSDF Rescue Squadrons participate in Keen Sword

Personnel from  the Japan Self Defense Force are teaming up with Kadena Air Base's 33rd Rescue Squadron and  Eielson's 212th Rescue Squadron in support of a Japan-wide, joint-bilateral exercise that will run until Nov. 19.

Exercise Keen Sword is a bilateral field training exercise held biennially since 1986. The exercise is designed to increase the interoperability of U.S. Forces and the JSDF to effectively and mutually provide for the defense of Japan, or respond to a regional crisis or contingency situation in the Asia-Pacific region.

35 FW supports ATR with JASDF

More than 120 Airmen from Misawa Air Base, Japan, arrived here Nov. 7 to conduct training with the Japanese Air Self Defense Force as part of the Aviation Training Relocation Program.

Implemented in 2006, the ATR program allows U.S. and Japanese forces to further enhance their interoperability and joint partnership by conducting training away from the U.S. forces' home station, while also providing a noise respite for those living near the U.S. Air Force installations of the units participating in ATRs throughout Japan.

Keen Sword 2015: Sharpening medical readiness throughout Japan

Members of the 374th Medical Group, 18th Aeromedical Evacuation Squadron and U.S. Army Soldiers with the 47th Combat Support Hospital trained their medical evacuation procedures and response during Keen Sword 2015 at Yokota Air Base, Japan; Kadena Air Base, Japan; and Yokosuka Naval Station, Japan, Nov. 12 through 13.

More than 11,000 U.S. personnel participate in the exercise which is aimed at increasing combat readiness and interoperability between Japan Self Defense Forces and U.S. forces.

Pope appoints Eielson chaplain to become bishop of Fairbanks Diocese

During a press conference Nov. 8, it was announced Pope Francis has appointed Chaplain (Maj.) Chad Zielinski, 354th Fighter Wing deputy wing chaplain, as the new bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Fairbanks, Alaska, Nov 8.

Zielinski is scheduled to be ordained Dec. 15 at the Carlson Center in Fairbanks.

"I was very shocked and humbled to be chosen by the Holy Father," Zielinski said. "I'm looking forward to the new venture and challenges, but by the grace of God and the talents of the people around me the transition should be smooth."
