Humphreys AFAP seeks to improve services offered
CAMP HUMPHREYS -- Whether it is registering a vehicle or handing out equipment at one of the fitness centers, the services, programs and quality of life initiatives here would not be what they are without community members like those who participated in the Army Family Action Plan Conference, Oct. 1-2. AFAP, which has been around for 31 years, is the Army's grassroots process to identify and elevate the most significant quality of life issues impacting Soldiers (all components), retirees, civilians and families, to senior leaders for action. Information provided through the AFAP process gives commanders and leaders insight into current satisfaction detractors, quality of life needs and the expectations of Army constituents. Leadership uses the information to affect changes that improve standards of living and support programs.

The band played for about 75 minutes, featuring its well known hit songs "Tonight, Tonight," "I Like it Like That," and more. Following the concert, 30 people (who waited in line for most of the afternoon for the chance) got to meet, get autographs and take photos with them. -- U.S. Army photos by Steven Hoover

Airman stops attack dead in its tracks

In August of 2013, Alaska Air National Guardsman Master Sgt. Brian Neild was enjoying his weekend.

The sun was out even though the temperature was brisk, and he was with some friends wandering around a market in downtown Anchorage. They settled at a café, a place with a view of the main Anchorage bus station.

It was then the AKANG personnel systems manager watched a woman start arguing with a middle-aged man.

The argument escalated and the man, who was roughly six-foot-two and whose dress and thin appearance implied he might be homeless, grabbed the woman by the neck and pinned her against the wall.

Osan Airman makes AF softball team

As she steps onto the field, her body is overcome with an adrenaline rush. The winning, the losing, the years of competing at different platforms has pushed an Airman to continuously take her talents to a higher stage.

Senior Airman Amber Devlin, 694th Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Group program manager, was selected Sept. 3, 2014, to be part of the Air Force Women's Softball team during her first time trying out for the team.

"The highest level I played at before joining was on my high school team, then on the base team after joining the Air Force," Devlin said. "Trying out for the Air Force team was a challenge and something I've wanted to do after I enlisted."

Aircrew members go behind-the-scenes of 735th AMS

The first Operation Aircrew Orientation took place here Oct. 9.

The half-day information exchange hosted by the 735th Air Mobility Squadron gave members of the 535th Airlift Squadron a look at the squadron's day-to-day operations.

"This is an opportunity for locally stationed aircrew members to be educated on how aerial port and maintenance functions in the 'en route' environment," said Maj. Lloyd Richardson, 735th AMS director of operations.

Richardson said the orientation was especially important considering the unique relationship the squadrons share. Though the 735th AMS often provides service for the aircraft and aircrews from the 535th AS, the two squadrons belong to separate major commands and parent units.

PACAF modifies Command Strategy

Gen. Hawk Carlisle, Pacific Air Forces commander, released an update to his PACAF Command Strategy for promoting stability, security and engagement in the Asia-Pacific region.

"I recently directed my staff to reassess our Command Strategy based on the rapidly changing security challenges within the region.  We must also take careful consideration of fiscal budgetary limitations," Carlisle said.

"My intent however has not changed.  We will defend U.S. and Allied territory, protect U.S. interests, promote regional stability and free access, deter aggression, and maintain our readiness posture to use Airpower to respond to the full spectrum of military contingencies," Carlisle said. "We will expand engagement, increase combat capability and improve our warfighter integration to achieve our goals."

Air Force implements TDY policy changes

Recently, the Air Force started implementing two temporary duty policy changes that will impact travel reimbursements for Airmen.

The first change, which took effect Oct. 1, made changes to the Joint Travel Regulations, Reimbursable and Incidental Expense Policy. The second will be a change in long-term TDY per diem expenses and take effect Nov. 1.

Incidental expenses

Under the new policy, Contiguous U.S. laundry expenses, tips to baggage handlers by uniformed members and ATM fees are now considered incidental expenses and are no longer reimbursable as separate miscellaneous expenses. These expenses will now be added to the current list which includes such items as tips to porters, baggage carriers, bellhops, hotel maids, stewards and stewardesses.

Icemen families packed into Eielson's Fire Station 2 to enjoy a day of fun during an open house Oct. 5.

The first open house in 10 years was held in conjunction with National Fire Prevention Week which began a series of activities held around base.

"The purpose of this open house is to get the public in here and aware of the fire department, Fire Prevention Week and why we hold it," said Senior Airman Nick Belair, 354th Civil Engineer Squadron fire prevention technician. "This year's Fire Prevention Week theme is 'Working smoke alarms save lives, test yours every month' and we really want to make the public aware of how important working smoke alarms are, not having one could mean life or death during a fire."
