Mock trial; real consequences

A group of Airmen gather into a large open room filled with benches, two desks, a head table and a few side tables. A girl sits off to the left crying. A man sits to the right looking straight ahead, emotionless. Attorneys, witnesses and the jury take their places, waiting for the judge to arrive and start the trial.

Airmen attending the First Term Airmen Center and Noncommissioned Officer Professional Enhancement Seminar at Kunsan Air Base, Republic of Korea, had the opportunity to view such a court proceeding, Apr. 16, 2014.

Local team deploys providing global influence

Family and friends of members assigned to the 13th Fighter Squadron, 35th Maintenance Group and other 35th Fighter Wing units recently said goodbye to their loved ones heading for deployment in support of a U.S. Central Command mission in Southwest Asia.

The expeditionary mission demonstrates U.S. Pacific Command's combat-ready capability to employ airpower worldwide in support of combatant commanders.

While the F-16 Fighting Falcons assigned to the 13 FS consistently train to maintain readiness at all times, it isn't possible without the assistance of maintenance and other supporting units.

673d ABW raises sexual assault prevention awareness

Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson's 673d Air Base Wing recognized Sexual Assault Prevention and Response stand-down day, April 11. Each April, the Department of Defense observes Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month and commits to raising awareness and promoting the prevention of sexual violence.

Air Force Col. Brian Duffy, JBER and 673d ABW commander, began the day's events with a briefing on the number of incidents reported and victims' willingness to report. Following the brief, Airmen went to their respective units and conducted small-group discussions about how to prevent, recognize and report sexual assault. Afterwards, Airmen spent the remainder of the day conducting team-building exercises. Such exercises included analyzing different scenarios regarding sexual assault, potential barriers to getting more involved and being educated on signs of sexual assault.

Langley AFB F-22s partner with Kadena F-15s, JASDF

F-22 Raptors from the 94th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron stationed at Langley Air Force Base, Va., partnered with 44th Fighter Squadron F-15 Eagles and the Japan Air Self-Defense Force out of Naha Air Base April 4.

For the first time since the F-22s arrived on Kadena in January, the three units trained on defensive counter-air and multi-lateral integration operations in order to improve interoperability and bolster readiness.

"I think we've made great strides throughout the course of my career in making sure we can execute jointly and execute with a coalition, and nothing but goodness can come out of it because if we do end up going to war, that's the way we're going to fight," said Lt. Col. Darren Gray, 94th EFS F-22 instructor pilot. "We're always ready, but even more so after deployments like this."

Wolf Pack weapons to load up pen-wide competition

Every year, weapons load crews from the South Korean peninsula gather to compete for the title of the best in Korea; but how did Kunsan's 8th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron weapons loaders get there?

Two teams, one from the 35th Aircraft Maintenance Unit and another from the 80th AMU, were chosen to represent the Wolf Pack during the annual competition held at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, Apr.26, 2014.

"First of all, I would have to say I'm proud of the manner in which all of our weapons load crews perform each and every day," said Chief Master Sgt. Shawn Hughes, 8th Maintenance Group wing weapons manager. "The crews put a lot of time and effort into preparing for each competition, but due to the magnitude of the Peninsula Load Competition, each load crew will practice the load multiple times preparing themselves both physically and mentally."

Holocaust National Days of Remembrance Event

The Soldiers of Company L, 157th Regiment, 45th Division arrived at the Nazi concentration camp gates and saw they were locked. They scaled the walls and took out the guards. When they had liberated the camp, what the Soldiers saw brought many of them to tears of sorrow and anger. How could a human do this do another human?

April 29, 1945, at 7:30 a.m., marks the 69th anniversary of the liberation of Dachau Concentration Camp, Germany. Less than three months after Dachau was liberated, a frontline medic from the 71st Infantry Division arrived to assess the cleanup effort. After 92 days of combat, his unit had traveled more than 1,060 miles and had taken 108,000 Prisoners Of War. What this medic saw would change his life forever. His name was Alvin Fleetwood. Fleetwood, a World War II veteran, was recently the keynote speaker for Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson's Holocaust National Days of Remembrance event at the Frontier Theater on JBER-Richardson, April 10.

The prestigious award has a passing rate of five to 25 percent, making it one of the most difficult badges to earn in the U.S. Army and most definitely the most difficult in the U.S. Army Medical Corps.
