Pacific's harbormaster, watercraft Soldiers ensure readiness, synchronization
The many ports, beach heads and other water terminals throughout the massive, Island-filled Pacific region are busy places. But "busy" doesn't do justice to their traffic during natural disasters or other contingency operation situations. When watercraft are quickly moving in and out delivering cargo, managing that traffic is a critical part of safety and mission success.

Team Andersen pays tribute to fallen Airmen during Linebacker II ceremony

Team Andersen held its 42nd annual Linebacker II Remembrance Ceremony at Arc Light Memorial Park Dec. 18 for Andersen-based service members who lost their lives in support of Operation Linebacker II in 1972.

Seventy-five Airmen lost their lives during the operation including 33 who were lost from 15 downed B-52 Stratofortress bombers. Base leadership made remarks at the event commemorating Operation Linebacker II. The operation also referred to as the "11-Day War," was conducted from Dec. 18, 1972 to Dec. 29, 1972 during the Vietnam conflict. After peace talks between the U.S. and North Vietnam failed, U.S. President Richard Nixon ordered the bombing of North Vietnam to bring the North Vietnamese government back to the negotiating table.

Operation Christmas Drop brings holiday cheer to islanders

More than 1,200 miles from the nearest western civilization, a man stands on a beach wearing only his lavalava. He lifts the bright orange flag with yellow brim and stakes it in the ground, marking the spot to ensure it is easily seen, especially from air.

The 80-degree weather, palm-tree-covered islands and miles of surrounding ocean does not typically bring Christmas to mind, but this man knows the day has come for Operation Christmas Drop and soon a C-130 Hercules would fly above his island to deliver holiday gifts.

Volunteers put holiday spirit into Operation Christmas Drop

Boxes wrapped in an assortment of festive Christmas wrapping papers were spread throughout the local community, all with a wish list taped to their exterior. Each box represented a donation drop-off spot for Operation Christmas Drop.

But, the time for donating was over, as volunteers collected the boxes of items and brought them to a warehouse for sorting Dec. 4. The estimated 50,000 pounds of items are packed as low-cost, low-altitude bundles onto C-130 Hercules aircraft and sent off to the islands throughout Micronesia. Before the most critical part of OCD began, the items were sorted.

Operation Christmas Drop supplies islands with bundles of joy

The men and women from Team Andersen and Yokota Air Base, Japan, dropped its last bundle of joy Dec. 13 to the Micronesian Islands as Operation Christmas Drop came to an end just in time for the holiday season.

What started as a small crew packing what they could in a small canister and dropping it down on a parachute during a Pacific sortie in 1952 has turned into Operation Christmas Drop, the Department of Defense's longest running humanitarian mission.

Over a one-week timeframe, residents from 56 islands spread out across 3 million square miles of the Pacific received boxes filled with donations from local and international donors. This year's event set a milestone with more than 51,000 pounds of supplies donated and delivered.

Chaplain's 50-year journey to become bishop of Fairbanks diocese

"I've always had a committed faith and a love for God, but never really thought of becoming a priest until I was enlisted in the Air Force," said Chaplain (Maj.) Chad Zielinski.

The Michigan native, who currently serves as the 354th Fighter Wing deputy wing chaplain, was ordained bishop of the Fairbanks Catholic diocese in a ceremony Dec. 15. This requires a dedication to an area the size of Texas, much of which isn't accessible by road.

Born in 1964, in Alpena, Michigan, to a school teacher father and social worker mother, Zielinski said his family was very committed to their faith, attending church and religious education every week.
